dropin group and instead welcome only people who are playing the Play
the Recorder Month event
or the Walk

Other Events

The next Boston
Recorder Society Concert Series event
is this Sunday. Steve
Tapper will play his own arrangements, assisted by John Tyson and

h3. Schedule

The “party”:http://www.laymusic.org/party.html is on Sunday starting at 4. Please feel free to drop in before or after anything else you have scheduled. If you’re wondering what to bring, just about anything in the finger food, salad, vegetable or dessert line will probably be appreciated.

We will be having our regular dropin meetings on Tuesdays at 8:45 PM at “my place”:http://www.laymusic.org/directions.html for the next couple of months.

In March or possibly late February, we will switch to being a performing group, to prepare for the “BRS Play the Recorder Month”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org/calendar/cal_popup.php?op=view&id=451 event, and the Walk for Hunger on the first Sunday of May.

People are starting to ask me about what we’re playing for these events. I have some ideas, but I’d be happy to hear yours, as well.

h3. Other events

In January, several of our friends will be playing a “concert”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org/calendar/cal_popup.php?op=view&id=494 of 17th century English Consort music.

The “Viola da Gamba Society of New England”:http://www.vdgsne.org/ is having a workshop on January 20 at Brandeis that will welcome brass, reed and string instruments, and also recorders that play at 8-foot pitch (tenor or larger). Bonnie has the details.

Additions

I’m trying to finish up the entry of the Dowland ??Lachrimae??, so here are three new ones:

* “??Lachrimae verae??”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/374.html
* “??Semper Dowland, semper dolens??”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/375.html
* “??Sir Henry Umpton’s Funerall??”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/376.html

In addition, there’s a fairly major change (5 notes, including note values for four of them, plus a fix for the tenor word underlay) to “??Deare if you change??”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/77.html. If you have either Book I, or that piece individually, please download it again.

Report on the December 5 meeting

We played:

* Dowland group:
** ??Flow my tears??
** ??Lachrimae Antiquae??
** ??Lachrimae Amantis??
** ??Semper Dowland, semper dolens??
** ??Sir Henry Umptons Funerall??
* Gabrielli, ??Canzon septimi toni a 8??, from ??Sacrae Symphoniae?? (1597)
* Byrd, ??My little sweet darling??
* Purcell ??Cakes and Ale??

h3. Schedule

We’re currently planning to meet as a dropin group on Tuesdays at 7:45 PM at “my place”:http://www.laymusic.org/directions.html for the next couple of months. Specifically, I don’t have any plans to do anything different on either December 19 or December 26.

The “party”:http://www.laymusic.org/party.html is on Sunday, December 17, starting at about 4, also at “my place”:http://www.laymusic.org/directions.html. Please come and invite your friends. For those who haven’t been before, it’s a very nice mix of good food, good drink, and good music.

Some time in late February or early March, we will stop being a dropin group and restrict meetings to people who want to perform with us at either the “BRS Play the Recorder Month event”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org/calendar/cal_popup.php?op=view&id=451
or the Walk for Hunger in May.

Report on the November 28 meeting

We played:

* Marcello ??Sonata III??
* Jenkins:
** Pavanne in D major
** Pavanne in E minor
* Mundy, ??My Prime of Youth??
* Dowland:
** Flow my tears
** Lachrimae Antiquae
** Lachrimae Amantis
** Lachrimae Verae
** Semper Dowland, semper dolens
* Gibbons ??The Silver Swan??
* Arcadelt ??Il bianco e dolce Cigno??
* Purcell ??I gave her cakes and I gave her ale??

h3. Schedule

We’ll be having our usual dropin meetings on Tuesdays at 7:45 at “my place”:http://www.laymusic.org/directions.html.

We have the “party”:http://www.laymusic.org/party.html scheduled on Sunday, December 17, starting at 4:00 PM. There’s now a “hardcopy”:http://www.laymusic.org/xmas06.pdf invitation online.

The next performance I know about will be at the “Boston Recorder Society”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org “Play the Recorder Month”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org/calendar/cal_popup.php?op=view&id=451 event on March 24. Assuming we also play at the Walk for Hunger again, this means that large chunks of March and April will be non-dropin rehearsals for people who want to perform at those events.

h3. Other events

“The Heliotrope Consort”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org/calendar/cal_popup.php?op=view&id=314 will be playing this Saturday at 8 PM at the Cambridge Friends Meeting House. I have an extra ticket, if anyone wants to go. The program will be mostly Telemann.

Additions

I’ve been transcribing at the usual rate, but being a bit lazy about putting them up. So we have:

* A set of pieces related to the Josquin ??Mille Regrets??:
** Susato’s “Mille Regrets”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/368.html, with editorial underlay of the Cantus line only. My group complains about the underlay but hasn’t suggested any improvements.
** Josquin’s “Mille Regrets”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/369.html
** Susato’s “Les miens aussi”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/367.html, which is a ??Responce?? to the Josquin. Basically, the girl is saying, “Yes, I am also not long for this world once you leave.”
* Some new Byrd:
** “In Nomine II”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/370.html
** “In crystal Towers”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/371.html
** “I have been young”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/372.html
* Wilbye’s “Draw on sweet Night”:http://www.laymusic.org/music/sp/html/pieces/373.html

Report on the November 21 meeting

We played:

* Bach ??Fugue in C major??
* Sermisy ??Vive la Serpe??
* Byrd ??In Nomine II??
* Gibbons ??In Nomine??
* Dowland:
** ??Can She excuse my Wrongs??
** ??Earl of Essex Galliard??
** ??My thoughts are Winged with Hopes??
** ??John Souch, His Galliard??
** ??John Langton’s Pavane??
** ??His Golden Locks??
* Rounds:
** ??He that will an alehouse keep??
** ??Cakes and Ale??
** ??He that drinks is Immortal??

h3. Schedule

We will be doing our regularly scheduled dropin meetings on Tuesdays at 7:45 PM at “my place”:http://www.laymusic.org/directions.html.

The Christmas party will be on Sunday, December 17, starting at 4 PM. I will be producing a printed invitation soon. This is a come and tell everyone you know to bring everyone they know party — please invite your friends.

The “Boston Recorder Society”:http://www.bostonrecordersociety.org will be having a Play the Recorder Month event on March 24 at the Allston Public Library. I’ve told the organizer that we’d like to play a set. It will probably be only 10 minutes, and we’ll use recorders more prominently than we normally do, but not exclusively, since I think a lot of the groups will be just recorders.
