Letter from an artist about economics

[Hollis Frampton]

Letters of Note
published this
letter
from a film-maker to the Museum
of Modern Art
about a proposed exhibition of his work, which
they wanted him to participate in “…for love and honor and no money is included at all…”.

It’s not an easiliy excerpted letter, but here’s the last
paragraph:

I hope we can come to some agreement, and soon. I hope so out of
love for my embattled art, and because I honor all those who
pursue it. But if we cannot, then I must say, regretfully, however
much I want it to take place, that there can be no retrospective
showing of my work at the Museum of Modern Art.

New theme on LayMusic.org

[bugs]

I got a notification that there was a new WordPress version
available, so I updated my blog. This is normally a good idea,
since WordPress puts a lot of work into fixing security bugs not
too long after the hackers find them.

In this case, it turned out that my theme was incompatible with
the new version, and none of the menus worked. This could
probably have been fixed, but my theme was a bit of homemade CSS
on top of a theme than hasn’t been maintained for several years,
so I decided to just go to the latest offically approved theme
and customize it.

I think what I have is inoffensive, and some time when I need a
Friday afternoon art project, I may make it better.

Meanwhile, if there’s anything from the old theme that isn’t
there that you miss, let me know, and I can probably put it back.

Meeting report

We played:

Schedule

We continue to meet on Tuesdays at 7:45pm at 233 Broadway,
Cambridge. As long as there’s a quorum, this will include
December 22 and 29.

Remember to invite all your friends to the party
on January 1, and to let me know whether you’re coming and what
you’d like to bring.

Cantabile Holiday Party

I wrote:

The January 1 date for our annual party has been
working out well. But this year, January 1 is a Friday, and I
don’t see that the Saturday or Sunday would be any worse than the
Friday. So let me know by Friday if you’d prefer to come on one of
those dates instead of January 1.

So far I have heard a murmur against January 2, and no
enthusiasm for January 3, so it will be January 1.

So bring your voice, bring your instruments, bring your
friends, bring food and drink if you have some you want to share, to 233 Broadway, Cambridge on
January 1, 2016. We’ll start at 4, and continue until everyone
turns into a pumpkin.

As usual, here are printable invitations:

  • This
    one
is one page with our flyer on the back.
  • And This
    one
can be folded in four to be pocket sized.

5/20 in 1968

[Buckley and Vidal]

I watched Best of
Enemies
last night.

The debate point that struck me as having changed the most
since 1968 was that Gore Vidal said, “The top five percent of the
population has 20 percent of the wealth and the bottom 20 percent
of the population has five percent of the wealth.”

This sounds like the income equality we only dream about now.

If you’re wondering about whether to see the movie, it’s been
pretty well described in the reviews. I don’t know that anyone
who didn’t watch the debates in 1968 would care much today, but if
like me you were fascinated by it then, you’ll enjoy watching it
again and seeing some of the backstage story.

(non)Meeting report

With people out of town and rehearsing for other groups and
having just returned from being out of town, we didn’t have a
quorum for a regular meeting.

However, there was a 5-part piece we’d been wanting to
proofread for a while, so two of us joined 3 players at John
Tyson’s place and proofread Valle che de’ lamenti miei

by Giaches de Wert
